Dynamics 365 Business Central – edition features explained
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is composed of integrated tools that allow end-to-end businesses management. The product has a plethora of features that can help improve your sales, financial management, customer service and overall operations.
The Business Central solution comes in two editions: Essential and Premium, including the following features.
Business Central features – Essential edition
Financial Managament – key features
Audit trails – Audit trails are automatically assigned, as well as posting descriptions for all transactions. You may also create reason codes to define your own audit trail.
Bank account management – multiple bank accounts can be managed to work with different currencies, and you may reconcile your bank statement data automatically to open bank account ledger entries.
Budgeting – create and manage budgets using the general ledger accounts.
Currencies – work with multiple currencies in all entities of the system, including payables and receivables, general ledger reports, resource and inventory items, and bank accounts.
Deferrals – define deferral templates to automate the deferrals of revenues and expenses over a predefined schedule.
Dimensions – the ledger supports an unlimited number of dimensions for advanced reporting.
Fixed assets – create fixed assets and keep track of transactions like acquisitions, depreciations, write-downs, appreciations and disposals.
General Ledger – the base of the system is where you set up companies, chart of accounts, and do posting to the general ledger, journals, post VAT, work with recurring journals and source codes.
Intrastat reporting – the solution automatically provides the necessary data to report Intrastat information to statistics authorities.
Multiple languages – the solution supports multiple languages, allowing you to switch language in real time.
Supply Chain Management – key features
Basic warehousing – manage items on a bin level. You can pick and put away items in a bin, and move items between bins, and optimise space usage and picking processes.
Item transfers – keep track of the locations of inventory. Register movements from one location to another, and account for the value of inventory in transit at various locations.
Locations – work with multiple locations of inventory which may represent a manufacturing plant, a distribution centre, a warehouse, a showroom, a retail outlet, or a service vehicle.
Purchase orders – create and post purchases, blanket orders, and manage all processes regarding purchase orders.
Receivables – use journals to post sales transactions and register receivables.
Sales orders – create and post sales orders, blanket sales orders, and manage all processes regarding sales orders.
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) – key features
Campaigns – work with segmentation of your contacts and organise automated and scheduled campaigns.
Contacts – contact entity feature to centrally manage your contact information for all business relationships.
Dynamics 365 for Sales integration – synchronise with the CRM-solution Dynamics 365 for Sales.
Opportunity management – sales opportunities can be created, and you can keep track of the current sales stage for each opportunity.
Outlook integration – synchronise your to-do items and your contacts with your meetings, tasks, and contacts in Outlook.
Project Management – key features
Estimates – monitor the usage level of resources, keep an overview of the capacity for each resource, including information about availability and planned costs.
Jobs – create and manage jobs and keep track of resource usage on jobs and data for invoicing the customer. You may manage both fixed-price jobs and time-and-materials jobs.
Resources – manage the resources offered for your customers, work with resource groups, and keep track of individual resources.
Time sheets – allow your employees to register time using simple and flexible time sheets. Include manager approval, and integrate with service, jobs and resources.
Human resources – key features
Employees – keep track of employee information, and organise data about experience, skills, education, training, and union membership.
Expense management – post employees expenses in order to reimburse their expenses.

Service Management – key features
Dispatching – assign and dispatch service personnel and field technician, and filter on availability and skills.
Planning – assign service personnel to work orders and log details about handling and status of work orders.
Service contract management – manage contacts with details on service levels, response times, and discount levels. Record the service history of contracts, including used service items and parts and service hours.
Service item management – keep track of your service items, including contract data, component management, and bill-of-material and warranties.
Service orders – manage after-sales issues, service requests, services due, service orders and repair requests.
Service price management – maintain your prices for service offerings.
Manufacturing – key features
Agile manufacturing – you may have an agile approach to planning with rush hours, exceptions, last-minute changes to processes with multiple planning options.
Demand forecasting – create production and purchase orders, based on the demand forecast together with the level of available inventory and data of requirement planning.
Capacity planning – add capacities to the manufacturing process. Set up routings on production orders and in material requirements planning.
Finite loading – calculate with capacity constraints to make sure work is not assigned to a work centre exceeding its expected capacity of execution during a given time period.
Machine centres – you can manage capacity in detail for machine centres and on a consolidated level for work centres.
Production orders – create production orders and post consumption and output to the production orders.
Supply planning – calculate material requirements based on demand. The solution supports master production scheduling and materials requirements planning.
Version management – create versions of the manufacturing bill of materials and routings.
